Taught By:
Learn the fundamentals of digital design techniques for 3D making. We'll use free CAD tools (including TinkerCAD, OpenSCAD, Inkscape, and others) to design objects for 3D printing and laser cutting. Our focus for 3D printing will be on using the toolchain to produce models that enable the FDM process to work effectively. For laser cutting, we'll focus on the details of vector path and bitmap creation in order to clearly provide data for a laser cutter's file constraints. We'll explore designing for external parts, lighted sculptures, and articulated models with mechanical tolerances. Students in the course may arrange access to 3D printers and a laser cutter on campus.
