Advanced GIS is the second course in the sequence for the Certification in GIS (Graduate level). The completion of Introduction to GIS (Graduate level) is a prerequisite to take this course. Advanced GIS is a fast-paced course designed to deepen students’ knowledge about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and broaden their professional skills for map creation and publication.

In Advanced GIS students learn how to use the ArcGIS Pro software (by Esri, Inc). Following professional best-practices, students will learn how to manage geodatabases, visualize spatial data and make many types of maps.  Students will use ArcGIS Pro to conduct spatial analysis in 2D and 3D and analyze temporal dimensions of spatial phenomena. Students will be introduced to advanced cartographic methods, and expand their skills for publishing maps into online web maps and dashboard apps.

Weekly class instruction includes hands-on homework labs.  Lectures, supplemental readings, and online discussions will enhance knowledge about coordinate systems, data resources and measurement methods, temporal analysis, and GIS project management. Students will work in teams on a mapping project throughout the quarter and present their final project in a public forum at the end of the quarter.

Hi-Flex Class Format:  This course is offered in a “Hi-Flex” format. Students can take this course in person, in Evergreen’s Computer Applications Lab (CAL) or students can participate from home over a simultaneous Zoom session. To take this course over Zoom requires students to have a sufficiently strong Windows-11 computer, with two monitors, a three-button mouse, and broadband internet connectivity. Faculty will provide support for students to install the software on their own computers, and remote desktop logins are also available to support the hi-flex learning option. Students can attend fully in-person, fully online, or a mix of both. Each class will be offered in-person but will also include a zoom link for remote attendees. We will do our best to provide comparable experiences for both in-person and remote students. Remote students can expect to engage with one another through breakout rooms, online discussion boards and other collaborative online methods.

Class Schedule: (Required attendance) Monday nights, 6pm-10pm

Open GIS Lab hours will be offered, optionally, for students to get support between class meetings.
