You may be surprised to find that there is more than one sort of algebra.  There is the one that you ran into in high school.  There is a type that computers use.  There is a different flavor found in some college courses.  Sometimes the type of algebra depends on how you plan to use it.  Do you want to organize ideas about business?  Are you interested in understanding relationships in complex systems?  The ideas of local and global are represented within and among the different sorts of algebra.

There will be opportunities for folks to revisit skills that you learned before.  Opportunities to open up to new horizons and learn absolutely new skills and ideas.  But it will be in a way that does not intimidate and does help you share ideas and support with classmates and family members.

In this class, each one will help at least one of their classmates learn some things, no matter what level you believe you are at.  Math is not just about numbers and computations.  It is more about organizing, creating categories in which to sort things, looking at relationships – between people and between ideas.

If you are ready to begin studying pre-calculus, you can do that in this class.  If you need to review operations with whole numbers, we have interesting ways to begin there.  No matter where you want to begin thinking and learning, we will have a book and a place for you!  And we will identify common ground where all classmates can meet and learn.
