Contemporary artists, writers, and scholars use publication in a variety of ways. From ephemera and mail art to avant-garde multiples and zines, this class will explore the many ways publication can fuel a creative practice. Students will learn the rich history of the multiple and independent publishing with assigned readings and studio projects that activate understanding. With labs hosted in the Book Arts Studio and Media spaces, students will be encouraged to explore the interplay between analog and digital processes. Seminars and workshops hosted in the library will focus on creative research and access to Evergreen's unique collections of artist books, zines, and chapbooks for inspiration. Class projects include pinback buttons, artist trading cards, a collaborative Fluxus kit, and a final publication of the student's choosing. Content of proposed projects can span disciplines and media and are designed to build upon work created throughout the academic year.
