We will explore three distinct creations of bands in this immersive program.
Over three modules, each spanning three weeks, students will discover techniques, traditions, and symbolism of these time-honored crafts. Culminating in the creation of woven bands and the final presentation of e-portfolios that showcases their learning journey.
Module 1: Braiding Techniques and Traditions
Discover the diverse world of braiding as students learn fundamental techniques and explore the cultural contexts in which braids are woven. From simple cords to complex patterns, understand how braids serve as symbols of heritage and craftsmanship.
Module 2: Bands Weaving Across Cultures
Examine the intricacies of narrow-band weaving, studying its techniques and cultural variations across different societies. Students will explore the significance of woven bands through the act of card weaving.
Module 3: Backstrap Weaving: Tradition and Innovation
Create contemporary backstrap weavings with modern tools, while examining the historical roots and traditions of the loom attached to the weaver.
Culmination: E-Portfolio Presentations
Synthesize your learning from the course by creating an e-portfolio that showcases your understanding of braids, bands, and backstrap weaving. Present your woven projects, reflections, and cultural insights to your peers.
In "Braids, Bands, and Backstrap Weaving: Yarns of Heritage" emphasis will be placed upon the discovery of your own heritage and how your own narrative could be woven.
