Most artists, regardless of the medium, develop a form of expressive practice that helps them to create meaning, to structure and maintain a particular identity, and to connect with others. This 16-credit program will give students the opportunity to focus attention on how to make meaning in their own lives through hands-on explorations in acoustic music and analog media. Part of our collective task is to understand what is important to us, and to strategize effective methods to manifest this in our creative work. The program will include two separate workshops each week in which every student will participate. In media, we will include hands-on work in alternative process photography through cyanotypes, basic animation exercises, 16-mm film experiments, and more. In music, we will work on performance, songwriting, and multiple types of world music skills as a way to expand our horizons of what is possible in sound. We will not be teaching skills in electronic production; instead, we will focus on where the systems of creativity spring from: the mind, heart, body, and sum of one’s life experiences.
