This course will explore some of the essential building blocks for starting a new business. Similar to the Changemaker Lab concept, but in a much more condensed format, students will go through the process of designing a business plan individually or in groups. There will be a strong emphasis on the creativity inherent in the business planning process.

With a heavy emphasis on design thinking, students will emerge with a basic understanding of ideation, business models, marketing, financial planning, and strategy. The quarter will culminate in a “pitch”, through which students share their work with peers and members of the community. Real small business examples will be used throughout the course to help students understand how course concepts can be applied.

While the title implies a focus on small businesses and startups, every organization must start somewhere. The skills gained from this course will be useful for anyone working on or in a business or nonprofit organization. This is a great course for students who know they are interested in business, or students who have no idea but want to find out.

This class will meet entirely online Tuesdays from 3-5pm with additional online coursework (like recorded lectures and online discussions) to be completed asynchronously between class meetings.
