How can organizations thrive in a world marked by rapid change, economic uncertainty, and global interdependence? What does it mean to lead ethically, think strategically, and act responsibly in the face of complexity?
This two-quarter coordinated studies program explores the foundations of business through an interdisciplinary lens rooted in Evergreen’s liberal arts tradition. Students will develop a systems-oriented understanding of organizations - private, public, and nonprofit - while building practical skills in leadership, financial literacy, strategic analysis, and communication. We’ll investigate how social, environmental, and ethical contexts shape business decisions and examine the ways professionals navigate uncertainty and design effective, values -driven solutions.
In the Winter Quarter, we’ll focus on the principles of business management and policy. Through lectures, workshops, and case studies, students will learn how core functions like finance, accounting, leadership, and organizational design contribute to effective and ethical management. Seminars will explore critical perspectives on the role of business in society and introduce systems thinking as a tool for understanding interconnections among people, institutions, and the environment. A required two-day overnight retreat will build community and launch students into collaborative project teams.
In the Spring Quarter, students will apply their knowledge to more advanced and global contexts. Teams will manage a simulated multinational firm, making integrated decisions across marketing, operations, and finance in a dynamic business environment. Students will also work with a local organization to conduct a strategic assessment and offer recommendations. Readings and seminars will address international business, sustainability, innovation, and the power of imagination in organizational life. Each student will complete a culminating project - a business plan, internship, or research paper -tailored to their interests and future goals.
This program is designed for students planning to pursue advanced study in business, nonprofit management, policy, or related fields. It is also a solid foundation for students interested in entrepreneurship, community development, or public service.
