Capturing Gems: Metalsmithing Techniques for Setting Stones

In this class students will gain knowledge of three different styles of stone setting techniques: bezel setting, tube setting, and flush setting. Beginner metalsmithing students will also learn basic techniques such as forming, sawing, drilling, soldering, and polishing. More advanced students will have the opportunity to refine their skills and focus heavily on stone setting. The finished projects will include adornment, small sculptural work, or both.

Presentations and short readings will provide students with a historical and contemporary context of the use of precious and semiprecious stones and other materials used in metalsmithing. Students will participate in a final critique at the end of the last class at which time students will share their work and give critiques to their peers.

Students will receive kits with all the materials necessary to complete assignments. Students may purchase extra materials if desired.
