Students will explore ceramic sculpture techniques using coil and slab-building methods. This entry-level course will introduce students to lidded containers and figurative sculpture while exploring three dimensional design using a broad range of surfacing methods. Students will learn the fundamentals of clay construction and incorporate plaster molded elements and incised slip designs onto sculptural forms. Presentations on historic traditions using clay as an expressive art medium will contextualize projects. Self-reflective projects will build towards refining a personal approach to both representational and non-representational sculpture.
