In this course, we will study foundational texts in the Western philosophical tradition from Enlightenment Europe, by Descartes, Spinoza, Locke, Hume, and Kant. We will explore theories of existence (ontology), knowledge (epistemology), action (ethics), and God (theology), reading and discussing primary texts and assessing them in explications and interpretive essays. We will also experiment with Artificial Intelligence tools, both to enhance our understanding of the texts and to consider the ethical use of this technology. Class will be devoted to seminars, lectures. and collaborative workshops. Students will be assessed on the basis of class participation and written work.
