This course explores the principles and practices of designing culturally responsive learning environments for preschool through elementary-aged children. It emphasizes creating dual environments, both physical and social, that celebrate and respect the diversity of children’s cultures. This course prepares educators to nurture the whole child by integrating family and community traditions while fostering a strong understanding of diverse backgrounds, languages, abilities, and learning styles. It also promotes a sense of identity, belonging, and lifelong authentic relationships.

Students will learn how to design inclusive and equitable classrooms, leveraging the strengths of children from diverse linguistic, cultural, and developmental backgrounds, including English Language Learners (ELLs) and children with special needs. The course focuses on how classroom layout, culturally relevant materials, and teaching strategies impact children’s social-emotional and cognitive development. Additionally, students will explore the role of family and stakeholder collaboration in building strong educational communities.
