This graduate elective delves into theoretical, empirical, and policy-related aspects of environmental justice, understood as both a field of study and a social movement. We will examine various facets of environmental inequality, including inequities in distribution of environmental amenities, participation in decision-making, as well as structural inequities according to race, class, gender, and Indigeneity in local and global contexts.
Beyond distributive, participatory, and structural dimensions, we will consider the question of epistemic justice particularly in the context of integrating ecological knowledge paradigms across cultures. Writing assignments include weekly reflection pieces, synthesis essays, and a research paper with the option of incorporating primary data through a suitable research method.
