This course will examine film through the lens of gender studies. Both film studies and gender studies will be covered at an introductory level, with additional support and opportunities provided to students with previous experience. We will focus primarily on feature-length, big-budget films created by women and trans directors.

During weekly class sessions, we will practice close reading scenes together, focusing on the representation of gender within each scene. We will also seminar on articles by authors such as Laura Mulvey, bell hooks, and Eve Oishi. Students will spend time outside of class viewing films on their own, including films related to genres or directors they want to learn more about. Throughout the quarter, students will read and discuss each other's work to expand their knowledge of gender and film, and to learn new writing techniques.

This course will be taught fully online. To successfully participate, students will need a computer (including a microphone and preferably a camera) and internet access.
