This year-long course sequence is designed for those who are beyond First Year French basic studies and ready to enter Second Year level and beyond. Students need to have had background and knowledge of fundamental grammatical structures, particularly present and past tenses and basic conversational skills. Classes will be conducted entirely in French, targeting plenty of review and augmentation of first year skills, then moving quickly to increased grammatical and oral/aural complexity. Primary objectives include: development of communicative interactions in French through cultural study, discussions, special projects and grammatical accuracy. In small group interactive activities, students will practice all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Through Francophone studies, students discover insights to their own culture and themselves while learning to express themselves in French. Fall quarter, students will develop stronger reading skills and oral facility working with short readings, analysis and discussions, alongside listening activities from web based interviews and films. Throughout the year, students practice role-play, theatrical scenes, engage with poetry and frequent conversations with native speakers to accelerate their skills.
To successfully participate in this program, students will need a reliable internet connection to access course activities (synchronous and asynchronous) and content. Our work will be conducted remotely, using Canvas, Zoom, Discord and YouTube. Students will have access to alternatives to synchronous (in person or remote) participation if conditions require.
