Gain confidence in observing form while working with biological subjects to document and interpret what you see. An introduction to the practice of natural science illustration is complemented by critique sessions allowing students to discuss and respond to each other's work. Build observational and visual interpretation skills while exploring illustration using a variety of techniques, including graphite, pen and ink, colored pencil, and watercolor.
The focus of this fundamental class is drawing, from gestural sketching to precision rendering of illustrations for scientific purposes. Each student is given the opportunity to render selected subjects from their own collection in a variety of demonstrated techniques. Students can choose to illustrate special objects from their personal collections. Students will progress towards creating three final projects.
Our work will be conducted remotely, using Canvas and Zoom. This offering will include lectures, workshops, and seminars. Learning will include recorded lectures and video-conferencing workshop sessions. Our approach will emphasize participation in synchronous (live) sessions; however, if students find themselves unable to participate due to technology, caregiving obligations, economic disruption, health risk, or illness, they can work with faculty to pursue alternate options to earn related credit.
