This course explores the critical role of fine and gross motor skill development in early childhood, particularly within the context of cognitive, physical, identity, and literacy development. Students will examine how motor skills lay the foundation for reading readiness in infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and Pre-K children. A culturally responsive lens will be applied, incorporating research and theories from African American child development scholars and other theorists of color. The course will include hands-on activities designed for educators and families to support motor skill development, including adaptations for children with developmental delays. Resources from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) will be integrated throughout the course.
