Who are we? What forms our sense of self as we change over time, from birth though late adulthood? How do we perceive and understand the world and our place in it? What explains our need for explanation, for creative expression, and for stories?
In this program, we explore these fundamental questions from the perspectives of psychology, philosophy, and drama. By means of a survey of ancient and modern texts in the theory of knowledge, ethics, and tragedy, combined with both general and more focused works in psychology, including cognition, developmental psychology, and social psychology, we will learn how theorists and writers have understood human thought, emotion, motivation, and values over time, both before and after the advent of modern experimental psychology.
Knowing Me, Knowing You is good preparation for students interested in further studies in the social sciences and humanities. Faculty will support students as they develop their skills in critical thinking, social science research methods, and writing. Class sessions will be devoted to lectures, seminars, and workshops. This program will lead students through entry-level work in the Psychology, Health, and Community and Humanities: Culture, Text, and Language in World Societies Paths of Study.
This program is coordinated with Greener Foundations for first-year students. Greener Foundations is Evergreen’s in-person 2-quarter introductory student success course sequence, which provides first-year students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive at Evergreen. New students expected to take Greener Foundations will be prompted to register for a 2-credit Greener Foundations course in addition to this 14-credit program during registration. Students that took Greener Foundations in fall quarter will be automatically registered in winter quarter to complete the 4-credits of Greener Foundations.
