This course seeks to expand imaginaries of Latin America and its diverse peoples and perspectives by looking through the eyes of filmmakers and engaging the questions they pose. We will view contemporary Latin American feature films, documentaries, and animation, and analyze each work within relevant political and cultural contexts. Students will build interpretive skills and gain understandings of how diverse filmmakers, using a wide range of aesthetic strategies, have responded to colonialism, neoliberalism, and democratization, while representing struggles about collective memory, intersecting identities, and community self-determination. Students will prepare short readings, participate in discussions, and complete a weekly screening journal.
