This 2-quarter program focuses on students interested in multilingual (ML) teaching and pedagogy, literacy and translanguaging specific to Latinx communities in the United States, also known as Latinx Studies. Our program welcomes students with community and academic interests in U.S. Latinx cultures, histories, and ML education. These perspectives are often excluded or misrepresented in K-12+ schools, which impact the kind of curriculum and instruction the Latinx community has access to and academic success they may experience. As a result, this program seeks to build a bridge between language, culture and learning. Students will examine the cultural foundations of Latinx, Afro-Latinx and Latinx LGBTQ+ studies, as well as consider more accurate representations and interdisciplinary approaches to ML education. We invite Evergreen students to consider approaches to ML Education and Latinx Studies that include curriculum development projects and creative teaching presentations in such areas as: 1) language and literature; 2) arts and media; 3) cultural, science and health studies; 4) historical/ancestral origins and immigrant movements, and; 4) activities and strategies for community outreach, affirmation and support.
