In this class you will learn to play the piano! You'll also learn to read music (treble and bass clef), and you'll learn the basics of music theory such as scales, chords, and how to hear intervals. If you don't know what all those terms mean, that is fine. You will learn it in this class. Think of music theory as the grammar of music. This class is for anyone who is a beginner in piano and/or music theory and wants to enhance those skills.
Class will meet once per week where students will learn new skills, practice songs on the piano, and learn and implement music theory. This is a doing class - lots of time at the piano playing songs, playing scales, etc. Outside of class students will be expected to practice 45min per day. You will need access to a piano or keyboard for this class (there are practice rooms in the COM building that you can use!). Class attendance and consistent practice outside of class is mandatory for this class.
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate the basic techniques of playing piano
- Read basic staff notation for treble and bass clef and realize basic symbols with the instrument
- Play approximately 5-10 simple piano pieces
- Play at sight simple compositional structures
- Identify and play the major and minor keys
- Identify simple chord progressions
- Identify intervals by ear
