This course will cover the often over-looked artists throughout Indian Country, with a particular focus on painters. Students will learn about artists, their techniques, and their life's work through lecture, class discussions, and written reflections. Students will choose a Native American artist to study and research then write a short paper focused on the artist and their art, examining time and place and cultural elements that contribute to the works. Students will create their own artwork through a series of assignments and share their papers and final sketchbook at the end of the term. Classes are held at the House of Welcome Longhouse on Saturdays and Sundays: September 30th and October 1, November 4th and 5th, and December 2nd and 3rd from 3pm - 5pm.
