Researching Personal Narratives

Researching Personal Narratives is open to all students interested in weaving personal narratives and research into creative writing projects. As creative writers we are often inspired by our obsessions. Whether we’re writing poetry, memoir, or lyric and hybrid forms we turn to outside sources to help guide our process and inform our work. Research can be a powerful tool to enrich personal narrative. In this course we will examine the different ways we can integrate research into our personal narratives. We will explore craft and technique by reading successful works by published authors, and experiment in weaving our own research into our personal writing. We will look at fiction and nonfiction forms, as well as the art of docupoetics, which combines primary source material with creative writing. including interviews, news articles, letters, photographs, dairies, court transcripts, medical records, and a variety of public records. This course is for all level of creative writers and researchers and will be on Wednesdays, 6-9pm on zoom (synchronous learning 3 hours/asynchronous 1 hour)
