Special Topics in GIS is the third course in the three-quarter sequence for the Certification in GIS.
This class is intended to provide graduate students with advanced GIS skills in areas supportive of thesis work, capstone projects, and other research needs. To be eligible for this course, students must have fulfilled prerequisite study of Advanced GIS.
General GIS topics to be covered include:
- GIS in 3D: Creating visualizations of elevation in maps and interactive apps using LiDAR datasets
- Application of satellite imagery for mapping landcover and change detection
- Deploying Survey123 for mobile field GIS studies and data collection
- Implementation of Community Analyst (Esri) software for demographics analysis
HYBRID CLASS PRESENTATION: This class will be offered using a "hybrid" approach. Class meetings will be offered, with both in-person attendance at the campus CAL (Computer Applications Lab) and fully-online (Zoom) options for student participation. Each class session will be broadcast over Zoom to any students who elect to attend from home or other off-campus location. Note that taking this course in hybrid manner requires two computer monitors, and reliable and sufficient internet bandwidth, especially for those students relying on RDP connections to access a campus computer over the web.
Class Schedule: This course typically meets on Mondays, 7:00 pm-9:30 pm, PST.
Open GIS Lab hours will be offered Tuesdays from 4:00pm-6:00 pm, PST.
