This interdisciplinary study-abroad program offers an introduction to Chinese language and culture through the lenses of social and political systems. Students will visit and study at universities in Taiwan to learn about the cultural and business centers, and witness modern, traditional, urban, and rural life. Discover how Chinese traditional culture exists in a modern society. The program includes language and culture lessons, day trips, hands-on learning, and guided tours to companies, museums, tea farms, and other historical sites in Taiwan. Students can also taste authentic Chinese and Taiwanese cuisine and visit local markets.
Cultural competency is essential for those interested in international trade or intercultural communication. We will learn about Taiwan’s modern development, and how their people cope with the fast growing economic system. Expect to also experience different religions and folk faiths.
Enroll for eight credits for summer full session. During the first part of summer, students will begin their study trip to Taiwan for two weeks in Taipei, Tainan, and in Kaohsiung as well as tour the rest of the island. Scholarship may be offered so please check with the faculty for more information. Students who returned to the US after the study trip to produce multimedia reflections and reports/presentation in second session may enroll for 12 credits for the full session. All participating students will be asked to document the study trip and to prepare a journal/report.
