The Legislative Process is an elective course that will connect to the Evergreen-Tacoma Campus’s 2024-25 Cycle Makers, Cycle Breakers program theme by focusing on how social and environmental issues and concerns are addressed through legislative policy. This course will be grounded in the issues and topics of the Washington State Legislature. This course is intended to give students the tools to understand, analyze, and be able to advocate for legislative policy change. Students in this course will enhance their understanding of the legislative process and the workings of the Washington State Legislature. Skills developed in this program offering include identifying relevant issues, tracking bills, writing effective op-eds, and communicating effectively with legislators. Coursework will include completing weekly writing assignments and delivering an in-class presentation on a bill introduced in the upcoming session. By the end of the class, each student should be an expert on a bill of their choice and able to explain it to their classmates.
