I joined the Evergreen faculty in 1986. I have written electronic music, songs, jazz charts, and modern classical music, and also improvise at the piano. Recent articles include "Sexual Identity in 'Company,' 1969-2019" in Sondheim in Our Time and His, edited by W. Anthony Sheppard (2022), and "The Screenplay for 'Singin' in the Rain,'" in The Oxford Handbook of The Hollywood Musical, edited by Dominic Broomfield-McHugh (2022). A study of Miloš Forman's 1979 film version of Ragni, Rado, and MacDermot's rock musical Hair (1967) is included in Broomfield-McHugh's Oxford Handbook of Musical Theatre Screen Adaptations (2019). Teaching Style
I prefer to be a guide on the side of an ongoing learning community--that's why I'm at Evergreen! That said, I also lecture, interrogating concepts in psychology, business, and history by sharing, analyzing, and discussing relevant musical examples: popular songs, world music, selections from musicals and operas, and short segments from longer films and documentaries. I can also teach basic vocal, public speaking, and music skills in easeful, accessible ways.
