I teach literature, American Studies, and Queer Studies. My research centers on the cultural practices of human rights, and on literary engagements with the cultural politics of rights. Publications include the book Colonial Affairs, and dozens of scholarly articles on topics such as affect, paradox, and style in human rights practices. I have served in boards of Pride Foundation, Evergreen's Board of Governors, and the Orbis Cascade Library Alliance. In all these endeavors, including teaching, I think of my work as promoting human flourishing.
