Visual Arts Facilities

Well-furnished with professional grade equipment and tools, our staffed studios host daytime programs and evening courses, providing opportunities to learn technique and explore thematic content across mediums.

2D & 3D Studios

Arts Annex, 1114

Evergreen has five large studios built with flexibility in mind to accommodate programmatic needs each quarter as well as one studio dedicated to students pursuing advanced work through Individual Learning Contracts. Large sinks, tall ceilings with bright task lighting, work tables, easels and more, make experimentation with a wide variety of materials and mediums possible. As an enrolled student, you will have nearly 24/7 access and are encouraged to develop strong personal ideas along with the skills and language to express them by working independently and collaboratively in the studio.

Wood Shop

Arts Annex, First Floor

Programs with an emphasis in 3-D design work are allotted studio time in the wood shop where faculty, instructional staff support and student aides are present to assist you in completing sculptural and/or functional pieces safely. Some of the equipment available includes a 36" surface sander, three 10" SawStop table saws, a horizontal mortiser and two large lathes. Multiple planers, jointers, bandsaws and an assortment of sanding and finishing equipment, as well as an array of carving sets, hand planes, mallets and other handcraft tools are available to proficient students during instructional and open studio hours.

Fine Metals Studio

In addition to equipment and tools that support basic metalsmithing skills, the studio can accommodate in-depth studies in lost wax casting and kiln-fired enameling amongst other specialized techniques. In addition to the main studio, there is a dedicated smithing room with a wide assortment of dapping tools, forming stakes and a hydraulic press. When working in this studio, you can expect to develop a range of techniques suitable for exploring ideas of adornment to creating small-scale sculpture.

Ceramics Studio

Arts Annex, First Floor

This spacious studio is equipped with twenty-four electric potter’s wheels that look onto Evergreen's forest and a spacious hand-building room. The kiln room houses four electric oxidation kilns, a raku-style kiln and a natural gas downdraft reduction kiln. Most students work primarily in cone 06, and can participate in specialty cone 10 reduction firings.

Daytime and evening and weekend ceramic courses at Evergreen introduce techniques ranging from functional to sculptural where you can choose between interdisciplinary study and focused craft. We also provide intermediate to advanced opportunities through Independent Learning Contracts and Student Originated Studies programs. This studio employs student staff who have a significant role in operating this unique space.

Printmaking and Book Arts Studio

Whether you're an artist seeking to expand your repertoire, a book lover fascinated by the art of printing, or simply someone yearning for a new creative outlet, our instructional printmaking and book art studios are the perfect place to nurture your artistic potential. Our studios are state-of-the-art facilities with a vibrant community of printmakers who share your passion.

Our studios were designed, built, and equipped to support learning in the following areas:

  • Intaglio, one of the oldest and most revered printmaking techniques. Delve into the intricate world of etching, engraving, and drypoint, where every stroke and mark on the plate carries its own unique character. Learn how to transform your designs into stunning prints that will captivate and delight you.
  • Letterpress, a technique that combines artistry and craftsmanship. Discover the beauty of setting type, arranging it meticulously, and then witnessing the magic of your creation come to life on paper. Our instructors will teach you the fundamentals of typography, ink mixing, and press operation, allowing you to craft exquisite and tactile prints.
  • Mono-printing, a versatile technique that offers boundless creative possibilities. Explore the art of transferring unique and spontaneous designs onto paper, creating one-of-a-kind prints that cannot be replicated. Our instructors will guide you through various techniques, including additive and subtractive methods, enabling you to express your artistic vision with confidence.
  • Relief printmaking, where you'll learn to carve and print from a block of material. Discover the rich history of woodcuts and linocuts as you develop skills in image creation, carving techniques, and ink application. Watch your designs emerge from the block, ready to adorn the pages of your handcrafted books.
  • Serigraphy, commonly known as screen printing, is a versatile and widely used technique. Learn how to create stencils, mix vibrant colors, and master the art of printing multiple layers. From fine art prints to artist books, our instructors will help you unlock the full potential of this captivating medium.

Drawing Studio

Arts Annex

An expansive drawing studio filled with natural light from overhead skylights and large roll-up glass doors. Develop your visual awareness and foundational skills such as proportion and light/form interaction as well as more advanced techniques in design and composition through drawing the human form with live figure and skeleton models, as well as a bevy of dynamic props.

Scheduling

There are now three dedicated spaces available to students and faculty outside of scheduled program use for critique sessions and presentations. 

Seminar II Critique Room

Seminar II E-4115

A multi-use space ideal for classes, critiques, performances and shows. It is approximately 40 x 80 feet, making it currently the largest room on campus for art critique and display. The space has a fully-equipped A/V room, a 15-foot retractable projection screen, and a theatre-quality lighting system.

Arts Annex Critique Room

Arts Annex 2104

This room has a mounted projector and retractable projection screen. This large, open space is ideal for slide show/video presentations. Track lighting and sculpture podiums are also available, making this a great room for smaller groups.

Arts Annex 3D Design Studio

Arts Annex 1114

This room was designed with flexibility in mind and serves as additional classroom space and/or a space for multimedia presentations. There are tables and chairs, a stainless steel sink, projection screen and retractable projection screen within the space.

Maximum Capacity approx. 50 people

Please note: These rooms are reserved first and foremost for Visual and Environmental Art programs. Availability of these rooms changes weekly. 

Schedule Evergreen
