Everyone who is directly responsible for generating credit at Evergreen will be a member of the faculty. The college seeks to avoid the distinctions in rank characterizing traditional institutions. Therefore, all faculty will be appointed to the rank of "Member of the Faculty" without any hierarchical distinction in titles. In those cases where indication of a professional specialty is relevant, designation of particular discipline(s) can be made in parentheses, e.g., "Member of the Faculty (Biology)."

Since different members of the faculty may, however, have differing kinds of responsibilities, the college has established categories of faculty membership which recognize the necessary differences in selection, evaluation and reappointment procedures. These categories are:

(a) Regular faculty (on both "term" and "continuing" contracts).
(b) Visiting faculty
(c) Resource faculty
(d) Adjunct faculty
(e) Library faculty
(f) Learning Resource Center Administrative faculty
(g) Post-retirement faculty
(h) Emeritus faculty

The distinguishing characteristics of each of these categories are summarized below:

(a) Regular faculty. Regular faculty members (see also paragraphs 4c and 4d of section 4.300) are primarily hired to teach, except that the president, provost, academic deans, and dean of the library may also be regular faculty members, depending on the conditions of their appointments.

Regular faculty (except for the administrators identified above) are expected to teach in the three major modes of instruction as their primary responsibility, but are also expected to participate in curricular planning, serve on DTFs, advise students, engage in faculty development, and carry out other faculty duties discussed in section 4.300 (faculty evaluation and reappointment). The administrators identified above will carry out the duties defined in their job descriptions while serving in an administrative capacity.

Regular faculty other than the president, provost, academic deans and the dean of the library are selected through the regular faculty hiring procedures. They are appointed and evaluated according to section 4.300 of the Faculty Handbook. They may be full or part-time.

(b) Visiting faculty. Visiting faculty (see also paragraph 4b of section 4.300) are those non-retired individuals working primarily in a teaching capacity who have not been designated either regular faculty or adjunct faculty. Visiting faculty may or may not be expected to participate in DTFs, curricular planning, advising students, etc. depending on the terms of their contracts. They are selected in accordance with the Faculty Handbook's section "procedures for hiring visiting faculty" (4.200) by the deans according to their qualifications and ability to teach in order to meet particular curricular needs defined by the curricular development process. A staff member who is appointed as a visiting faculty member and who will be required to teach during that staff member's regular work hours must first obtain permission from the appropriate staff budget unit head. Visiting faculty may be full- or part-time.

Visiting faculty are appointed and evaluated according to section 4.300 of the Faculty Handbook. Visiting faculty may apply for regular faculty positions through the normal faculty hiring procedures. In the event that a staff person is denied or loses visiting faculty status, that action will not affect his/her continuation in regular staff duties and position.

(c) Resource faculty. Resource faculty are selected by the provost with appropriate advice from the TESC community to meet particular institutional needs. They may be full- or part-time. Normally, they will not be directly responsible for the generation of credit. Resource faculty appointments might be made in situations such as the following:

1) appointments under grant auspices in which the individual's remuneration is not part of the college's faculty entitlement.

2) appointments in which another institution bears the cost (if any) of the individual's being at Evergreen, e.g., faculty from other colleges and universities on paid sabbatical from their home institution who require institutional affiliation as a condition of their sabbatical.

3) a limited number of persons serving in short-term capacities as visiting artist, scholar, or lecturer. Less than one FTE of faculty entitlement is to be used by the college in this fashion in any given year. Compensation (if any) in such appointments is set by and at the discretion of the provost corresponding to the individual's contractual obligations.

Resource faculty generally have contract periods of no more than one academic year and renewal options as appropriate to their situations.

(d) Adjunct faculty. Adjunct faculty (see also paragraph 4a of section 4.300) are selected by the deans in accordance with the Faculty Handbook's section "procedures for hiring visiting faculty" (4.200) to meet specific (typically short-term) curricular needs. Adjunct faculty are not usually expected to serve on DTFs or perform other non-teaching duties unless additionally compensated. Adjunct faculty are always part-time. Adjunct faculty may be evaluated according to procedures developed by the deans which parallel those in section 4.300 insofar as this is possible.

(e) Library faculty. Library faculty (see also paragraphs 4e and 4f of section 4.300) are members of the library professional staff with faculty status as defined elsewhere in the Faculty Handbook.

(f) Post-retirement faculty. Post-retirement faculty are former regular faculty members who have retired with a post-retirement teaching contract as defined in section 5.200 of the Faculty Handbook.

(g) Emeritus faculty. Emeritus faculty are former regular faculty members who have been awarded emeritus status by the Board of Trustees in accord with their policy adopted June, 1992. "Emeritus faculty" is an honorary title which does not carry teaching or other duties, but which may (depending on fiscal constraints and state laws) entitle the holder access to certain college resources and facilities.

(h) Learning Resource Center Administrative faculty. Learning Resource Center (LRC) administrative faculty are exempt staff with faculty status. They are appointed by the provost with appropriate advice from the TESC community to work in the Learning Resource Center to provide support to students, faculty, and their programs in specific academic areas, such as writing and quantitative reasoning. The positions may be full- or part-time, and have faculty status in that they will be paid following the appropriate full or part time faculty scale, have voting rights at faculty meetings, and can assume appropriate governance assignments as faculty representatives. However, as exempt staff they are omitted from the faculty reduction in force policy, will not be responsible for the generation of credit though it is not prohibited, are not required to rotate into the curriculum, and have no automatic reversion rights into the status of regular faculty upon termination of their LRC position.

LRC Administrative faculty will report directly to a dean. They will have an initial three-year contract with the possibility of subsequent three-year renewal contracts. They will not be offered continuing contracts.

In addition to the faculty defined above, other members of the college staff (both classified and exempt) may from time-to-time be permitted to do a limited amount of teaching concurrent with their staff appointments (for example, through individual contracts or modules). Such teaching must be authorized by both the academic deans and the staff member's supervisor. Unless it is part of their formal responsibilities, staff are not expected to perform any other faculty duties and will not be compensated beyond their normal salaries, unless such teaching takes place outside of normal working hours and unless the staff member has been appointed an adjunct or visiting faculty member.
