This course will serve an introduction to painting through an investigation of landscape, portrait, the nude figure and still-life. It will provide a foundation for oil painting with a strong focus on color theory. Emphasis will be placed on developing technical skills through observational painting, while researching art historically significant works to develop a personal vision. No prerequisites are required, though a background in the basics of drawing is recommended. Students who have taken beginning painting in another medium (acrylic, watercolor, gouache) are welcome.
Class will meet in-person for 4 hours per week, with 4-5 hours of homework expected outside of class. There will be a kit available for sale in the bookstore, along with a student fee for some shared materials (paper and gesso). Students will likely find it easier to complete their projects in our dedicated studio on campus.
