Professional Practices for Artists

This course will provide students with a foundation of practical information to assist art and media students in building a successful career. Through lectures, discussions, readings, presentations, and demonstrations, students will learn practical applications of presentation, documentation, business skills, and career planning specific to being a working artist. We will cover artist resumes, artist statements, grants, artist residencies, and graduate school applications. We will discuss taxes for artists, working with galleries and museums, websites, and promoting and documenting your artwork. The class will spend a significant amount of time discussing types of art venues and the appropriate contexts for different types of work. A strong body of artwork and dedication to practice is encouraged, though not required.

Our work will be conducted remotely using both Canvas and Zoom. Students can expect our remote teaching to be around 3 hours of remote meeting per week and 4-5 hours of asynchronous coursework/independent work time per week, using Canvas and Zoom.
