This course will provide students with a foundation of practical information to assist art and media students in building a successful career. Through lectures, discussions, readings, presentations, and demonstrations, students will learn practical applications of presentation, documentation, business skills, and career planning specific to being a working artist. We will cover artist resumes, artist statements, grants, artist residencies, and graduate school applications. We will discuss taxes for artists, working with galleries and museums, websites, and promoting and documenting your artwork. The class will spend a significant amount of time discussing types of art venues and the appropriate contexts for different types of work. A strong body of artwork and dedication to practice is encouraged, though not required. This course includes a great deal of writing about your own work and practicing public speaking.
This is Hybrid class that meets Tues 3:30-5 pm over Zoom and Thursday 3:30-5:00 pm in-person on campus. Attendance at both sessions is required. Students can expect 4-5 hours of asynchronous coursework/independent work time per week on top of 3 hours of synchronous Hybrid learning.
