  • Beyond Discovery: The Path from Research to Human Benefit | NAS Beyond Discovery
Beyond Discovery is a project of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). It is a series of case studies that identify and trace origins of important recent technological and medical advances. Each case study reveals the crucial role played by basic science, the applications of which could not have been anticipated at the time the original research was conducted. The case studies are produced through a close collaboration between professional science writers and prominent scientists who have been directly involved with the discoveries being described.

Websites with Native American Cases

There are not many sources of Native American cases and they are often difficult to locate, because most keywords are organized by disciplinary topics and they do not usually include keywords such as “American Indian” or “Native American.” The following sources do include a small number of Native cases. As you evaluate these cases, be sure to look at whether the case truly presents a Native point of view and whether the case is up-to-date and accurate. There are many research cases that take the form of final reports on model Native American programs to funding agencies. These are not typically open-ended teaching cases but they could be converted into good teaching cases.

  • Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University
This large (+1500) collection of government and public policy cases includes a small number of cases on Native issues.
  • National Science Teaching Association | NSTA Case Studies
This large collection of science has a small number of Native cases.
  • TED Case Studies: An Online Journal
This environmental issues site has a small number of Native cases.
  • Lansdowne, M. 1999. American Indian Entrepreneurs: Flathead Reservation Case Studies. Pablo, Mt. Salish Kootenai College Press.
